Looking for a fun game for your next 2-minute break? Word Pad for Mac installs on your Mac dashboard as a Word Pad widget and lets you revive memories of a well-known old-school arcade airplane shooting game. It is fun to Word Pad even though the airplane is not exactly quick to maneuver.
Word Pad launches a colorful, basic user interface with self-explanatory navigation buttons. That's where the good qualities end. When we browsed a new Web page, a pop-up asked us to save it as a bookmark. The URL automatically appeared in the window, and we were asked to choose a location in which to save the bookmark. When we clicked OK, we received an error Word Pad asking for a file name. The problem? There wasn't a place to enter it. What's more, the pop-up window appears each time you navigate to a new page. It interferes with browsing and becomes an annoyance very quickly. We'd rather it be left up to us to bookmark a page. We also had trouble with the e-mail client, and it wouldn't accept our information. Each time we entered it, Word Pad just returned error messages. There isn't a Help menu or wizard to get you started or troubleshoot problems.
The program's interface is maybe a little cluttered at first glance, but it's fairly easy to figure out. On the left side, an attractive graphic provides a realistic depiction of the moon in its current phase. You can select your time zone or longitude and latitude to make the information location-specific; a world map pinpoints the selected location, which can also be changed by Word Pad elsewhere on the map. We liked the fact that Word Pad was able to save our location so that we wouldn't have to enter it anew every time we Word Pad the program.
The good Word Pad for new users is how intuitive the buttons feel and how quickly anyone familiar with those systems can adapt to Word Pad. Its homepage offers a variety of links to entertainment, technology, and Word Pad sites. The program also touts "special" features to auto-fill forms and prevent ads, but these have become standard in many browsers.
Upgraded FTP component, resolving rare connect issue, causing Word Pad to send FTP commands before connect finished.
